READING RAINBOW COLLECTIVE

with Sheats Social Services

At Sheats Social Services, we believe in the transformative power of literacy. Our Reading Rainbow Collective program, sponsored by LaTasha Sheats, offers free phonetic reading instruction to children in low-income neighborhoods, right here in Athens, GA.

65%

of the children in the US are reading below grade level.

85%

of black children read below grade level.

This program is designed to address critical literacy gaps, especially among black children.

Weekly meetings

We meet two afternoons a week after school for two hours during the school year and four days a week for four hours a day in the summer months.

Set-Up

We have a classroom set up with small tables and materials on shelves for independent access by the students. With a maximum ratio of 1 to 5 (tutors to students), we use a program that allows the students to progress independently at their own pace through a system of sequential steps.

Day One

When a child is initiated into the program, we assess their reading and spelling skills to place them in the program.

Building Confidence

This program is designed to be self-directed so that the child is using it as a tool to learn on their own. In this way, the learning becomes their personal accomplishment and feeds their self-confidence which further fuels their progress.

Our Mission

Empowering young minds through the joy of reading. Our mission is simple: to bridge literacy gaps and foster a lifelong love for learning among children in our community.
